Don Felder is one of the most versatile and skilled
guitarists in American music. He delivers an emotional, sensitive harmony
with the same elegant easiness as he does
a heavy rock beat.
He
picked up guitar playing in his early years, played at fraternity parties at home in Gainesville, Florida and in a band called "The Continentals", featuring
Bernie Leadon and Stephen Stills before moving
to New York where he joined "Flow".
In
the early 70-ies he moved to California and 1974
he became a member of "The Eagles" after
contributing on slide guitar in the song "Good Day In Hell" on their album
"On The Border".
Over the
years, the most famous song that has been
connected with him is "Hotel California".
This song, which he composed and has played
more than one giant solo to has also become
one of the most well known and loved
Eagles songs.
However, his
contributions go far deeper than that.
Solos and
harmonies he has delivered on various
Gibsons, Fenders and Gretschs mix well with the
vocal harmonies that is one of "The Eagles"
trademarks.
During the
"14 year vacation" of Eagle inactivity
Don worked with different projects. His first solo
album "Airborne" was released 1983, an album
played and produced by him alone and
from which the song "Bad Girls" became
a music video. Another tune from the album,
the romantic "Who Tonight" holds a more sad and serious lyric showing
his engagement in social matters.
Don has
appeared as a guest on a number of other
artist's CD's. Bob Seeger, Warren Zevon, Joe Walsh,
David Blue and Stevie Nicks, just to mention a few,
have had the luck to enjoy his musicality and skills
when performing with them.
As a
composer he also added a couple of soundtracks
to the movies "Heavy Metal" and "Fast Times At
Ridgemont High", the songs "Heavy Metal" and
"All Of You".
When
"Hell Freezes Over" and the world tour
that followed in its tracks took place in 1994-1997
it presented a new acoustic version of
"Hotel California" even more fantastic than
the original. It showed not only that Don has notes,
rather than blood in his veins. It also gave the world
an amazing solo intro and Walsh duo final even more
fantastic than the original.
1998 he was
inducted to the
"Rock and Roll Hall of Fame"
in company with all the Eagles members
including Bernie Leadon and
Randy Meisner.
Very well deserved!!!
Since
February 2001 Don is no longer a member of
the Eagles who by his parture lost a big musical heart
and one of the music world's best guitarists.
Today rumour
says he is working on a new CD.
What is not a rumour is that he regularly
participates in different charity events like the
"Howard Keel Golf Classic" in the UK which he hosted 2004 and 2005, taking over after
the late Mr Howard Keel who left this world 2004.
This tournament, that has raised more than a
million dollars
to the NSPCC over the years and Don's heartfelt
engagement has been invaluable
for the children in need.
He is one in
a million!
